Sarah Kendall is a masterful storyteller. And she has some jaw-dropping, thought-provoking stories to tell.

Some of them may even be real.

While she starts out in quiet, unremarkable form, gently warming up the audience with some banter and yarns, she slowly draws together various threads from across her life, building a picture that culminates in the Story to End All Stories.

It is like watching a spider playing around with some lines and then suddenly realising you are in the centre of a beautiful web – and quite possibly the prey. It is partly autobiographical, possibly self-cleansing – possibly fully fabricated – not a little unnerving and yet definitely entertaining.

Within the bigger story of being 13 years old and striving to be popular at school, there is a tale of lies, stolen cars, loss of face, milkshakes, mothers and mayhem. There is also the small matter of an earthquake, but don’t worry about that – just find a table or doorway and you’ll be OK.

Originally from Newcastle, Kendall now lives in Britain so it’s worth grabbing this chance to see her live.

A word of warning; the Portico Room at Melbourne Town Hall is ridiculously hot, so wear layers. And maybe sit near the doorway, just in case.
